Solar cost and sizing

Residential roof with solar modules

Start with electricity use

A 3 kW or 5 kW label describes generating capacity. It does not tell you the installed price, monthly savings or backup available. Compare your billed energy use, daytime loads and usable roof before choosing.

Collect recent bills across different seasons. Check the connection phase and sanctioned load, then identify shade, roof access and space needed for maintenance.

3 kW, 5 kW or 10 kW?

Illustration using 1,400 kWh per kW per year
CapacityAnnual energy illustrationAssessment question
3 kW4,200 kWhHow much of this energy can the household use or export under applicable rules?
5 kW7,000 kWhDo consumption, usable roof and connection permissions support the larger capacity?
10 kW14,000 kWhDo roof capacity, connection limits and actual consumption justify this capacity? Confirm the phase and accepted project scope.

These are arithmetic examples, not predictions for your property. A larger system can cost more without delivering a proportionate benefit if usage or site conditions do not fit.

Illustrative capacity

No calculation yet.

The starting values of ₹8/kWh and 1,400 kWh per kW per year are editable examples, not a local tariff or generation forecast. Bill ÷ energy tariff × 12 ÷ annual generation gives the capacity shown.

Fixed charges and taxes can distort a bill-based estimate. Use actual billed kWh for the assessment. Roof shade, connection limits, seasonal usage and daytime consumption still need review. This does not size batteries or predict savings.

Equipment and installation

Ask for module and inverter specifications, mounting structure, cable lengths, protection, earthing, labour and testing. Identify roof repairs, special structures and extra electrical work separately.

Charges and responsibilities

Check taxes, transport, metering and application charges, monitoring, handover documents, product warranties and labour support. Confirm exclusions and payment stages in writing.

Your installed price depends on equipment and site work. Request an itemised quotation. Treat any subsidy separately from the gross quote and confirm eligibility through the official application process.

Choose the system before the package

Bill reduction and backup require different design decisions. Compare system types, then review the home installation process.

Installation, support and documents

A capacity illustration is not an equipment package or an offer of a particular project size. Compare the installation process and handover responsibilities, then confirm the accepted scope with the team.
